Kerala at Slow Speed: Houseboats, Tea Gardens & Long Meals
Kerala is the destination where we tell travelers to do less. God’s Own Country runs on canal time: palm-lined backwaters, misty tea gardens and meals that arrive in courses with no clock attached. The trip gets better the slower you take it — here is how we run it.
A night on the backwaters
The centrepiece is a full night on a private houseboat out of Alleppey: palm-lined canals, paddy fields below water level, and villages that wave back. Dinner is cooked on board — Karimeen pollichathu is the dish to order — and the boat anchors somewhere quiet for the night. Wake early: the backwaters at dawn, with the mist still on the water and the first canoes out, is the whole trip in one hour.
Munnar before the crowds
The tea gardens work best on an early start. Roll out before eight and the mist is still lying in the valleys between the estates — by ten the viewpoints fill up. The Tea Museum earns thirty minutes, but the real exhibit is the drive itself: switchbacks through green that does not stop. Ask for a factory tour; the smell of fresh tea leaves stays with you.
Kochi evenings & the food to chase
- Fort Kochi: the Chinese fishing nets at sunset, then dinner in the old quarter.
- Kathakali: an evening performance is worth the hour — arrive early to watch the face-painting.
- The food list: appam with stew, sadya on a banana leaf, and as many banana chips as you can carry.
When to go
The season runs September to March, when the backwaters are calm and the hills are cool. The monsoon months bring Ayurveda-season deals and the greenest landscapes of the year — just plan around afternoon downpours. For first-timers, November to February is the sweet spot.
Pack light, move slow
- Cotton everything: Kerala is warm and humid; breathable layers beat style points.
- A light rain shell: even in season, the hills around Munnar have opinions.
- Also: insect repellent for canal evenings, a good book for the houseboat deck, and appetite room.
Our Kerala departures blend the classics — houseboat night, misty tea estates, Kathakali evenings — with quieter corners like Varkala’s cliff beach — see upcoming trips and take it slow.
