Kashmir by Houseboat & Foot: Dal Lake Mornings to Gulmarg Meadows
Kashmir is the destination we recommend most often to first-time group travellers, and the reason is simple: no other place we run packs this much beauty into this little effort. Shikara rides at dawn, meadows that look colour-graded, and food worth booking a trip for. Here is how our captains run it.
A morning on Dal Lake
The houseboat is the stay, not just the accommodation — carved cedar balconies, kahwa on arrival and a lake that changes colour all day. Set the alarm once for the floating market at dawn: vendors sell vegetables boat-to-boat while the mist is still on the water, and it is the most photogenic hour in Srinagar. Afterwards, let your shikara driver wander the channels; the floating gardens are best with nowhere to be.
Srinagar beyond the water
Give the city half a day on foot. The Mughal gardens — Nishat and Shalimar — are at their best in late afternoon, and the old city’s lanes hide bakeries pulling fresh sheermal out of clay ovens. Dinner on the houseboat should be Kashmiri proper: rogan josh, nadru yakhni, and as much kahwa as you can hold.
Pahalgam & Gulmarg
- Pahalgam: the pine valley base for Betaab and Aru — easy walks, pony rides if you fancy them, and rivers that stay glacial-cold all summer.
- Gulmarg in summer: the gondola up to Khilanmarg, then the bowl meadow beyond — wildflowers in July, silence in every direction.
- Gulmarg in winter: some of India’s best powder, with the gondola as your lift line. Book ski days ahead.
When to go
Kashmir works year-round, which is rare: snow season runs December to February for Gulmarg skiers, April to June brings flowers and clear meadows, and autumn turns the chinar trees copper. If you can only pick one window, early July hits the meadows at peak bloom.
What to pack
- Layers: even summer evenings cool down fast in the meadows — a fleece always comes along.
- Footwear: comfortable walking shoes for the gardens; proper waterproofs for winter departures.
- Also: sunscreen for the gondola heights, cash for old-city bakeries, and room in your appetite.
Our Kashmir departures pair boutique stays and houseboats with local captains who know exactly when each meadow peaks — see upcoming trips and pick your season.
