North Goa vs South Goa: How We Split Days Between Both
Ask any of our captains and the answer is the same: choosing between North and South Goa is the wrong question. The best trips split time between both — party beach days up north, hammock days down south, and the pastel lanes in between. Here is the split we run.
The north: shacks, music and markets
North Goa is where the energy lives. Beach shacks with live music, water sports off the sand, and the flea markets that run on their own calendar. Our north days mix a water-sports morning with a lazy afternoon and end at a shack with the sun going down over the Arabian Sea. Anjuna and Vagator for character, Candolim for convenience — your captain will match the beach to your mood.
The south: empty sands and slow days
Cross the river and the volume drops. South Goa’s beaches run wide and golden with a fraction of the crowds — think Colva, Palolem and the quieter coves beyond. Days here are hammock-shaped: long swims, fresh catch grilled at beachside shacks, and sunsets you watch from the sand rather than a queue. We keep stays in handpicked villas and boutique hotels a short walk from the water.
The in-between worth the detour
- Fontainhas, Panjim: the Portuguese quarter’s pastel lanes and azulejo tiles — go early morning before the heat.
- A spice-farm lunch: inland in the hills, with a proper Goan thali and a guide who makes cardamom interesting.
- A sunset river cruise: on the Mandovi, as the last light goes — the easiest hour of the whole trip.
When to go
Peak season runs November to February for perfect beach weather. But the monsoon shoulder months reward travellers who like Goa green, cheap and crowd-free — the waterfalls inland are at their loudest, and the shacks that stay open keep their best staff. March to May is hot and quiet, best for villa deals.
What to pack
- Light everything: cotton layers, sandals, and a beach bag that shakes out sand.
- Sun kit: high SPF, sunglasses and a hat — the Goan sun is not negotiable.
- Also: one smart-casual outfit for the nicer shacks, and a dry bag for boat days.
Our Goa departures split time between the two Goas with water sports, the spice-farm lunch and the sunset cruise baked in — check upcoming trips before the good dates go.
